2011 Beam Finals Part 1: Calculating Difficulty

November 23, 2011
by

This is part one in a series of posts about this year’s beam final. This part shows how the difficulty scores of all of the gymnasts were calculated. The second part will focus on skills that were downgraded, and the third part will focus on trends. I’m only doing difficulty here, mostly because it takes me less time and it is less subjective. I’ll think about doing bars and beam too, if people are interested.

All of the names are linked to videos of the routines.

I think that the first leap was probably devalued. I do not think that it was the second one because leaps are only devalued for lack of split if the split is 45 degrees off, and if it was devalued for lack of rotation, she would not get credit for the switch leap, because the first leap would be counted as the switch leap, which would cause her to lose a tenth in connection bonus. More about that in the next post.

I thought about downgrading both the sheep jump and the switch ring. I would probably go for the sheep jump, and that is reflected in the score above.

Catalina Ponor- 7th Place

The switch 1/2 was probably downgraded, which is why she lost credit for the switch leap and the bonus for connecting it to the Kochetkova. This meant that she had to count 2 A rated dance elements.

5D (.4)=2.0
1C (.3)=.3
1B (.2)=.2
