September 6, 2011

I was able to open the document on google reader (try it if you’re having problems!), so this list has been updated. It is very, very long.

The nominative registrations have been sent in and compiled for worlds. Unfortunately, I am not able to open the document posted by the FIG at the moment (you can see it here), but here is what I have seen on other blogs. Thanks to Full Twist for posting parts of this list before I was able to open it!

Some of the teams are exactly what I expected to see. Those include Great Britain and Russia (after Ghent). There are some huge surprises though. Huang Qiushuang cannot be counted on to hit a routine, but I thought that her talent would allow her to make another worlds. Jiang Yuyuan, who made the team, can be used on vault and bars, where she is somewhat reliable, but is not the gymnast she used to be on floor. Catalia Ponor is not on the Romanian team. I expect that to change before worlds. The US team is very very surprising. I would definitely expected to see Wieber, Raisman, Sacramone and Maroney on the team, and I thought that Caquatto had a very good shot. But I am very surprised that Anna Li is listed as the 6th team member even though she is not on the national team, and that Vega is listed as the alternate with Memmel nowhere to be seen. I have no idea when this was sent in, however (probably after nationals).

Of course, these are by no means the final teams. I expect the US team, for example, to change quite a bit after the selection camps.

    Hey,
    Thanks for the great post, it’s so good to know the nominative teams for the championships 🙂

    I was wondering, would you happen to know what’s happened to Yang Yilin? She is one of my favourire gymnasts, and I must admit that I was upset when I didn’t see her name on the list (not even as a reserve)

    I am worried that she has retired, she obviously hasn’t made the team to potenitally qualify for the olympics, but I had hoped that she would have >.<

    Thanks =)

      Yang was injured and grew a lot post-beijing. Even making last year’s team was questionable for her, but she ended up competing because she had one of the strongest DTYs on the Chinese team (she still does). Her beam and floor are too simple and her bars, which can still be pretty good, are not useful for China, which is the deepest bars team in the world. This year, with Yao and Tan becoming seniors, China got two DTYs that are not quite as good as Yang’s, but come from gymnasts who are useful on other events in a team final situation. He Kexin also got her DTY back this year. Deng Linlin, who was only used on beam last year, was phased out for the same reason, and with 5 member teams for London, He may be in the same position if her bars keep going downhill.

      I also think that it’s quite sad :(. Yang was a beautiful gymnast in 2008 and she looked like she had a bright future ahead of her. I have to say, though, I was not surprised that she didn’t make the team. I saw it coming for awhile. The good news is that I am pretty sure that she is not retired.
