Jordyn Wieber Training Videos

has posted two videos, which you can see below, of her trip to Gedderts Twistars a week ago.

Jordyn Wieber seems to be working on some upgrades on beam, including connecting her full to a backhandspring (+.2), adding a half turn to her johnson leap (+.1) and the rumored triple full in combination (+.3). The triple, which looks great in the air, seemed a bit under-rotated, which I have come to expect with all triple full dismounts, but hopefully she won’t compete it until she can get it all the way around.

On floor, it looks like she may be changing her last two tumbling passes. She is working on connecting her 2 1/2 to a leap, and a front layout-front 2/1-leap combination. While the first combination won’t change her difficulty score, the second pass, if it replaces her double pike, will add two tenths.

The small upgrades seem to be her coach John Geddert’s strategy at this point. In an interview with Gymnastike before the American Cup, he said that they were not planning on adding a whole lot of big skills. But these upgrades add .8 to her total difficulty, which is pretty significant. With this code, those 8 tenths are very important and while some of the combinations aren’t all that interesting (who else is tired of leaps to cover up landing problems?), they’re smart.

In my opinion, Jordyn has a very good shot at winning the world all around title in October. Because Mustafina is out of worlds, Komova is questionable, Jiang and Huang are struggling with consistency, Bross is somewhat questionable (although I do expect her to be back), Porgras hasn’t competed any upgrades and Iordache, Ross and Grishina are too young, the field is pretty open, not that she really needs it to be.

would the new leap be named after her?

I don’t think so. It’s already in the Code from 2009, without a name. I think that it will remain nameless, like the vault that Mustafina performed at worlds. Also, Diana Bulimar competed it at YOG last year, but it wasn’t named after her.

It was so hard to pay attention to Jordyn in the background when that little girl in the foreground in the floral leo was falling all over the place!

I agree but I think it is still too early to be placing something this big on her. She hasn’t been on something this big before and she might succumb to the pressure. Also, the players you mentioned still may be getting into form like the Chinese, Russians, Romanians and other Americans. I do agree that it looks like she is the best at this point.

I believe that is a 3.5 twist to a leap in the video and not a 2.5 as stated int he above 🙂
