Wieber Looking Ready to Challenge Mustafina at American Cup
It’s old news by now that Jordyn Wieber has been added to the lineup for the American Cup, which takes place this Saturday. Gymnastike went to Geddert’s Twistars on Saturday, February 26th, just a week before the competition to film a workout for their Workout Wednesday feature. This took place before Wieber, the alternate, was informed that she would compete in Jacksonville. Wieber will face a strong international field at her first senior competition competing all around, including the world champion Aliya Mustafina of Russia. The USA has not only a 9 year winning streak, but has also finished first and second at this meet for 9 years in a row. With it becoming an official FIG World Cup this year, stronger international competition is being brought in and it will be tough to keep up their record.
In the training videos, Wieber is shown performing great Amanars on vault and the same tumbling on floor that she performed last year at the US Classic. On beam, she was nailing her acro series and her standing fulls, along with attempting a new switch leap with half turn. In addition, she was training a side aerial-back tuck combination on a low beam. On bars, she is shown training a clear hip circle with a full pirouette out of her maloney, which will add a significant amount to her difficulty score. She struggled a bit with her pirouettes throughout the routine, but from the quote below from her coach John Geddert’s facebook, it seems as though she will be competing the new combination it.
WOW! Jordyn was simply on fire today at Verification scoring her highest AA ever, highest bars ever (nailing a new combination), rocked a great 2.5 (Amanar) vault, nailed beam and floor. Still plenty of work to do before this Saturday’s American Cup BUT she is definitely ready. Going against the toughest field of competition ever at the Am Cup will be a great challenge.
Geddert also mentioned in an interview that Wieber is planning on upgrading the 2 1/2 twist dismount to a 3/1 as predicted, but that does not seem like it will be appearing until later in the year. Besides small upgrades, he says that these are pretty much the routines they expect to keep for London. He also gives some information about Wieber’s teammate, Kamerin Moore, a former national team member who has been out with injuries for nearly two years. She in unable to do a roundoff at this point in time without serious pain, and therefore is reconstructing her routines without them. This is particularly challenging on vault because she, like the rest of the world, used to compete a yurchenko. Therefore, she has decided to drop back to level 10 for the year.
