The Amanar Club

February 12, 2011

MostepanovaFan has posted an updated version of a montage that she first posted about a year ago of all of the gymnasts who have successfully performed the Amanar (2 1/2 twisting yurchenko) in chronological order (I believe that Nabieva should be before Maroney and Komova should be before Mustafina). The newest addition to the club is US Junior MyKayla Skinner. Mykayla is a very powerful gymnast who also competes a standing full on beam and a double double on floor.

Who do you think performed the best Amanar?

For me, Cheng Fei beats them all. It’s a question of a balance between the power, lift and style. The American girls all do the Amanar flat and long; on the other hand the Russians achieve good lift and flight, at some exception to leg style, although Komova looks stronger at this particular skill and if it weren’t for landing errors I would put her second to Cheng.

Oh the horrific form that it usually takes to get the rotation of that vault around makes me ill. Though Maroney’s looked fairly nice, Cheng Fei’s was gorgeous but something about her vaults never seemed appealing to me.
I wonder if Shawn will ever compete this vault again? That blind landing is really rough on the knee, not to mention many are usually still twisting while landing. Double whammy. I hated blind landings after my knee reconstruction, I had the least amount of confidence in those.

Aliya Mustafina’ vault at 3.50 is fantastic. Best landing in the bunch!

The landing is good (I’d say equal to Maroney’s), but it is sloppy in the air. If she could fix her leg form, that vault would be fantastic.
