American Cup 2011

January 13, 2011

Full Twist posted a list of the gymnasts who have registered. You can see it here.

When I saw that only one Russian was competing, I was convinced that it was going to be Nabieva, so I’m pleasantly surprised that it’s going to be Mustafina. If she hits everything including an Amanar, she will likely be the first non-american to win the American Cup since Zamolodchikova in 2001. Raisman, Huang and Jiang will also challenge for the top spot, especially if they also go for an Amanar. If everybody hits, the podium should be made up of Mustafina, Jiang and Huang, but who knows what kind of shape they will be in. Raisman’s chances go up significantly because she is from the home country and because Jiang and Huang haven’t exactly been the most consistent recently.

While it is exciting to see all of the top gymnasts on this list, I miss being able to see new seniors at this meet. It was a great senior debut for a lot of gymnasts, and I wish that it was possible to attract top gymnasts along with some rising stars. I really wanted this to be Gomez Porras’s senior debut. Or at least somebody’s. I was getting tired of Russia, Romania and China not sending anybody, but I wouldn’t mind them sending one of their lower ranked gymnasts. Still, it will be the most exciting American Cup in a very long time. On the mens side, every single one of the gymnasts who were invited actually accepted, including Uchimura.
