Toyota Cup Day 1

December 11, 2010

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Aliya Mustafina and Jiang Yuyuan took the golds today on vault and uneven bars. In fact, vault went almost exactly as expected, with Rie Tanaka winning the silver and Ekaterina Kurbatova taking home the bronze. Mustafina watered down to a double twisting yurchenko and a yurchenko half on front layout off.

Jiang Yuyuan won bars easily with a 15.475, redeeming herself from her performance at the Asian Games where she fell on bars, beam and floor. Anna Dementyeva won the silver, scoring over a point less than Jiang Yuyuan but receiving one of her best bars scores this year. Japanese Olympian Yu Minobe was finished third. Aliya Mustafina struggled just like she did in Italy about a month ago, falling twice on her stalders and only scoring 10.625.

Rewriting Russian Gymnastics posted a link to quick hits in japanese. The google translation is hard to understand, but it seems to say that Lauren Mitchell has added a half twist to her double front dismount and that Anna Dementyeva has added the standard Russain maloney with half twist (although possible from a stalder entry).

Beam and floor finals take place tomorrow.

The Japanese report says that Mitchell did a toe on 1/2 to double front dismount (no half twist) and that Dementyeva did a stalder to a regular Maloney 1/2.

Thanks! I guess I didn’t decipher it correctly. That makes a lot more sense. It’s good that Dementyeva upgraded, either way. Not that she’s all that useful on bars.
