Preview: 2010 Bumbo Cup

December 1, 2010

The 2010 Bumbo cup in South Africa will take place December 2nd to December 4th, and feature gymnasts from 11 countries.

The WAG gymnasts competing will be Maria Rauta and Irina Paun of Romania, Katelyn Ohashi and McKenzie Wofford of the USA, Jessica Hogg, Venus Romaeo, Angel Romaeo,  Raer Theaker and Keira Brennan of Wales and Ashleigh Heldsinger, Jennifer Khwela, Nicole Szabo, Chanel Parsons, Kirsten Beckett, Claudia Cummins and Makeeda Phekani of South Africa.

It looks like the WAG competition includes the all around on December 3rd and the event finals on December 4th. For the most part, this competition is a chance for Katelyn Ohashi and McKenzie Wofford to compete internationally. I am almost certain that neither of them have competed internationally in the past. Ohashi will want to continue her upswing from classics and nationals this year. Unfortunately, she is not age eligible for senior competition until 2013. McKenzie Wofford is eligible next year, and needs to do a good job at this meet if she wants to have a chance at making the worlds team next year. She has a lot of potential on bars and beam, but she has been known to be inconsistent when it counts. Irina Paun of Romania won beam at the Massilia Gym Cup, and is getting another chance to compete internationally; Paun will not be a senior until 2014, meaning she is only 12 years old! Jennifer Khwela, the top gymnast from South Africa and probably their most successful gymnast ever, will have a chance to shine in front of a home crowd.
